Question by Andrew M: What are the downsides of proxy servers?

Is using a proxy server illegal? Does it leave your computer susceptible to virus? What are the downsides to using a proxy? Sorry, I’m new with this stuff. Thanks!

No, it’s not illegal.

When you use a proxy server, it means your internet traffic will go through someone else’s system. The advantage is that your computer’s IP address will be hidden from the sites you are visiting. The disadvantage is that the proxy server can watch what you’re doing and even modify page contents before they are sent to you.

If you’re using a proxy that you trust, it shouldn’t be a problem. I would not recommend using an untrusted proxy server on a regular basis, especially when using your personal information online.

No, they’re not illegal. Unless you use them to do illegal things. They bounce your internet connection through a completely different source before coming back to you. So if you use one to hack and they track it back to you, then yes, it’s illegal.
They can leave you open to viruses, but having any type of antivirus software can take care of that.
If you enter ANY type of personal information, it can be taken. If you log into your email provider (Yahoo!, Google, MSN, ect.) they can get your password. Same with Myspace, Facebook, anything. So using a proxy and entering personal info like a credit card number or Social Security is a very, very bad thing to do.

Proxies are legal, barring certain company regs. They do though leave you open to virus. Though in my experiences proxies are most often used for nefarious purposes on someone else’s restricted computer. Myspace is evil, myspace at school/work is an new level of evil.

Proxies are legal….it is more about the use and intent that is illegal. If you are doing illegal surfing then it is still illegal, no matter what.

A virus would still affect your computer the same but a proxy will help prevent a lot of malware and tracking cookie type applications. One of the most important things a good proxy can offer is protection against hackers/crackers and many spoofing schemes.

A good proxy will do more than just mask your IP. Masking your IP is important though since everything you do online is tracked, recorded, and associated with your IP address. I know the proxy I use also encrypts my connection so no one can spy on my data.

The only real downside to a proxy is that you need to use the right one or else all bets are off. Many free proxies can’t offer the same level of protection as a pay proxy. Many people don’t want to hear it since they refuse to shell out money for a proxy they can get for free–but many of those people are going to leave themselves vulnerable to a number of privacy risks.

Proxy’s themselves are not illegal. However, accessing a proxy server that you are not authorized to be on certainly is. Going out and finding a list of proxy servers and just deciding to log on means you know nothing about who owns it. Therefore determining if you are legal or not is impossible.

Some of the free proxy’s are run by well meaning people who are just trying to make a buck. They get an internet connection, put up a proxy server, stuff it with pay for click ads and figure they will get rich. Unfortunately several things are working against them. First, bandwidth costs money and ads are not especially high paying. So they don’t put a lot of bandwidth into the application. This means that your surfing is slow. Plus all those ads loading are both frustrating and add to the slowness. As with all proxy’s they are easy to block and the owner soon realizes that his traffic has gone down and he isn’t making any money. That ends the proxy service.

More worrisome are the free proxy’s run by hackers who use them to infect your computer and in some cases even take it over so they can access the internet on your line. This allows them to do illegal stuff without it tracing back to them. The number of people getting all kinds of viruses and trojans after accessing a free proxy is quite high. In a lot of cases you don’t even know it happened for days or weeks. In the mean time, they own you.

Another problem with proxy’s is that they typically only work for surfing. If you need to access some other web service like SMTP mail, messenger programs, VOIP software and such you are out of luck with the proxy.
