Question by .: Is using a tor legal? Are they free? How do you use one and how is it different than a proxy?

I was told that a tor is better protection than a free proxy. What is it exactly? I was trying to read on it but got lost. If someone can explain in simple language as I’m not very well versed in tech stuff. Thanks!

  1. Alex says:

First of all if by protection you mean against viruses, then neither a proxy or TOR will matter since they are about anonymity, The TOR (The Onion Router) is simply a large connection of servers that are set up so that it makes it very difficult for people to spy on what your doing. When you access something through the TOR it goes through all the servers and encrypts several times then decrypts has it goes through the servers, so the people spying on what your doing would have to trace it back through the servers which can be very difficult and time consuming. The TOR client is freeware and it is free to use the network.

TOR is completely legal in all countries with human rights, unless of course you use it for illegal stuff like selling drugs or child porn etc.

TOR is basically a larger, longer version of a proxy which is just 1 server in between you and the location
