Do other settings save successfully? If not, then the problem is most likely a preferences not saved issue.

See http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Preferences+are+not+saved for further details and troubleshooting information.

if you are on an apple mac go to system preferences network proxies and turn them off in there. also you can clear the cache of firefox in firefox preferences – privacy – settings. hope this helps dont know how it would work on a PC but it would be the same principal.
