Question by cryanjordan: Can I use my home computer as a proxy to get on my space and face book. If so how?

At work I can’t check my facebook and my space. I am in sales and use these sites to keep up with clients. I have asked management and they wont unblock them because they have problems with support staff using social networking sites, but would not mind if i use them. I’ve tried lots of proxy site and all the functions don’t work through them. Thanks for your help.

Why not just do your job, otherwise you could end up among the 10%+ of Americans without one!

If management would not mind you using these sites, they would be able to unblock them for you. Since they are not doing this, I suspect your real intent is an end run around system survellance equipment. This is very risky and it is likely any such attempts will result in management retallliation which can result in termination of all IT use as a minimum and discharge as a maximum. You would not be able to defend yourself in a discharge because you are clearly violating oompany proceedures.

If you really need social networking sites to do your job, and you really want to excel, do it at home in the evening on your own equipment.

Buy yourself a cell phone air card and get access to whatever you want. Hacking your employer is dumb.

Web filters like Websense can scan for and detect a proxy as soon as you try to connect to it. The technology is quite simple and all the web filtering systems now use it. It doesn’t matter what the name of the proxy is, how fresh it is or anything else. The proxy will be detected and blocked. Sometimes on the fly and others a little while later by the administrator.

Say you get a proxy to work for a bit. What do you get for all the work involved in finding one that does? Most of these free proxies are are hacker pots designed to either steal your information or plant bots on your computer. The hacker then has control of your machine and can steal credit cards, attack web sites and send out tons of spam all from your IP address. The recent Facebook and Twitter DDOS attacks that took down their entire networks is a classic example of what people using proxies and getting infected enables.

The few that are not hacker related are loaded with advertisements, as that’s how the owner is making money. The owner of the proxy is probably also watching everything you do so they can take whatever information they can, email addresses and such and sell them for a profit.

In either case the owner has no incentive to provide fast response, high bandwidth or compatibility with advanced web site features. You are being used by the proxy owner and they are delivering very little back to you.

Proxies don’t work anymore. The Web filters have all they need to block them as they are made.

Well. There is a new web proxy. I’ve been using it and it’s working for me. It works with both MySpace and Facebook.

  8. HomeComputer.ro says:

You can either use our proxy, which works with all the network social sites like Facebook, Myspace, Youtube: http://www.homecomputer.ro

or if you really want to do it on your own computer, on windows its not hard, but if you are not familiar with this types of things could get difficult:
    1. Install Xampp
    2. Install the proxy script from here: http://www.glype.com/ into your xampp htdocs
    3. Usually works, but if something its not working you should configure it.
