Question by John: How do services detect proxy servers?

I’m wondering how services can detect proxy servers. If you’re connected to a proxy server, then you’re sending requests to it to see web pages. Then when web pages come back, don’t they go to the proxy server, and then to the client? How does the service know that the proxy server is serving these pages from other sites?

Or is it because many people use the same proxy server and it’s IP gets flagged?

Cookies, Javascript, Java, ActiveX, and so on….
Also, some servers can see if the IP packets are “forwarded” with php scripts (which most forums run on)
