Question by sweetie: Considering security risks of using an anonymous proxy, what are some there ways to hide your ip address?

the risks of using an anonymous proxy are

Security Risks
When you use an open proxy server, your computer is making a direct connection to another computer. You do not know who is in control of the remote computer. If you are using proxy servers from open proxy lists, you could be trusting your email messages, passwords or other sensitive information to a person running the server. Someone can be watching the unencrypted information you are transferring over the network.

    Tor works pretty good: http://www.torproject.org/

Once again, you run the risk of someone decrypting your info, but it is a lot harder.

Tor is just as dangerous as a free proxy. The unencrypted end points are run by anyone who volunteers to host them. This means you have no clue who’s seeing your unencrypted data as it goes through their computer somewhere in the world. There is nothing hard about this, the data is completely in the clear at the end points by design.

There is also considerable risk in using free proxies from unknown sources. Many of these free proxies are what are called hacker pots. They are there waiting for you to fall into their trap so they can steal your information and plant bots on your computer. Once a bot is planted the hacker has control of your machine and can steal credit cards, attack web sites and send out tons of spam all from your IP address.

Some of the free proxies/vpn’s are run by people out to make money. There is nothing wrong with that in principle. However the best case here is that you will get a proxy loaded with advertisements with no real speed to it. The amount of money the owner can make with advertising clicks is really only pennies. Many of these owners supplement their income by key logging everything you do and selling your personal information to advertising companies. Since you have no way to know what the owner is actually doing you need to assume the worst case is true.
