Question by Elz: Can I get a route through a static IP on a proxy?

I need to access a restricted FTP server and to do so I need to provide them with my IP. Unfortunately my ISP don’t provide static IPs so any one that I provide will only work temporarily. Is there any way to use a proxy with a static IP to access the server or am I misunderstanding how proxies work?

If not, can you think of any other way around this problem?

Thanks for your help.

If the FTP site allows you do do it via a hostname / domain name you can go here – http://www.dyndns.com – setup a dynamic domain name through them that points to your dynamic IP. Download the software for your PC to keep your domain pointing to your dynamic IP whenever it changes.

What do you think? Answer below!

Use VPN services. This means Virtual private networking which is often the best and most cost effective way to provide remote access to your company network. The first step in deploying a VPN server/gateway is selecting the type of VPN technology to use. The four most common VPN technologies in use are PPTP, L2TP, IPSec and SSL. Each has advantages and disadvantages, so it is important to familiarize yourself with the characteristics of each, and with your users’ needs, before making a decision. See here: http://world-secure-channel.com/why/ the information about how to setup. There are the instructions for WindowsXP, Windows Vista, Mac OS X or any Linux. Choose what you need.

You can get a static IP from the VPN company listed below. When on the VPN you will maintain your IP address no matter where in the world you are or what computer you are using to access. I have used this vpn for 2 years and it always works.
